How to operate safely and remotely with recommended security tools

A variety of reports show that remote trainingremote work and remote learning are here to stay even if the pandemic goes away. Jabian and Miller listed several technology solutions schools are using to operate safely and remotely. They can be applied in government and corporate training settings, too.

  • A virtual private network, or VPN, is an encrypted connection over the internet from a device to a network. The encrypted connection helps ensure that sensitive data is safely transmitted. It prevents unauthorized people from eavesdropping on the traffic and allows the user to conduct work remotely.
  • Virtual desktop solutions give users access to their desktops and applications at any time, on any device, regardless of whether they are in the office or working remotely.
  • Monitoring tools watch and analyze traffic flow throughout a network.
  • Cloud email security detects, analyzes and protects against known and emerging threats.
  • Identity services engines are scalable, network-based tools that provide trusted access from anywhere.
  • Secure web gateways and cloud access security tools allow users to safely tap into data from the cloud from anywhere.
  • Online meeting platforms allow for training, videoconferencing, online meetings, screen sharing and webinars to be conducted remotely.
  • Data privacy solutions allow schools and businesses to protect sensitive information about students and workers.

Remote training solutions are more powerful, more effective, and more secure when companies provide VPN infrastructure and equipment for the employee/trainee. This is much less likely to be the case for K-12 students, however, for whom access is only the first of several hurdles to be cleared. -MW-
